What is CDCS

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT – COMMUNICATION SCIENCES

- What is the CDCS project?

This is a project on the development of a European curriculum in Communication Sciences, carried out with the financial support of the European Commission through its Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA – Lifelong Learning Programme – Erasmus Multilateral Projects – Curriculum Development: http://eacea.ec.europa.eu/llp/erasmus/erasmus_en.htm#emp

The Curriculum Development in Communication Sciences (CDCS) is a project aimed at enhancing cooperation among European universities through the design of an undergraduate joint curriculum in Communication, Information and Media Studies that allows for transparency and compatibility in terms of structure, competences and learning outcomes while retaining singularity and complementarities.

This primary goal originates in the need to create a new profile for European graduates in communication, information and media that emphasises international and interdisciplinary approaches and endows future professionals with the intellectual and interpersonal skills necessary in the complex and versatile world of global communication.

In order to reach this general goal, some specific objectives should be accomplished: the examination of the undergraduate curricula of all partners; the analysis of academic and professional profiles in relation to the demands of the European labour market; the development of a joint curriculum on the basis of interrelated competences, knowledge-based matters, coordinating teaching-learning strategies and student-staff mobility; and, finally, the design of a quality policy.

- Who participates in the CDCS project?

Partner universities are clear about enhancing a European Higher Education Area by the internationalisation of their undergraduate programmes through the development of this joint curriculum. From the beginning of the project, work carried out in identifying basic qualities of partners' curricula and professional profiles results in paving the way toward a compatible and transparent curriculum design.

The consortium is composed by six European universities:

· University of Deusto - Coordinator Institutuon- (Spain), www.deusto.es

· Università degli Studi di Bologna (Italy), www.unibo.it

· Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium), www.ucl.be

· Univerza v Ljubljani (University of Ljublijana, Slovenia) www.uni-lj.si

· Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (Netherlands), www.rug.nl

· Turun Yliopisto (University of Turku, Finland) www.utu.fi

- Aims and objectives

The project seeks to explore the possibilities of a joint degree in Communication Sciences within the frame of the European Higher Education Area. This primary goal originates in the need to create a new profile for European professionals in communication that emphasises the international and interdisciplinary approaches, through the acquisition of the intellectual and interpersonal skills necessary in the complex, rich and versatile world of global communication.

Taking into account the importance of education in the project of European integration so as to make Europe a whole and interconnected region, among our main aims are:

- to create an interdisciplinary and international approach,

- to teach communication studies understood from various perspectives and dimensions,

- and to provide training across the wide range of institutions currently involved in this field.
